Syncfusion brings AI summaries and redaction to .NET MAUI PDF viewer
Syncfusion's .NET MAUI Smart PDF Viewer adds an AI Assistant, Smart Redaction and Smart Form Fill, backed by Azure OpenAI or any Microsoft.Extensions.AI chat client. The component targets document-heavy apps that need summaries, sensitive-data detection and faster form entry on mobile and desktop.
Key points
- SfSmartPdfViewer arrives in Essential Studio 2026 Volume 3 for Android, iOS, macOS and Windows.
- AI Assistant supports summaries, document Q&A and suggested prompts through AssistViewSettings.
- Smart Redaction detects names, organizations, emails, phone and credit card numbers, with custom RedactPatterns.
- Smart Form Fill populates text boxes, combo boxes, radio buttons and list boxes from clipboard or custom text.
- AI providers plug in via Microsoft.Extensions.AI or the IChatInferenceService interface.
- Setup needs .NET 10 SDK and the Syncfusion.Maui.SmartPdfViewer, Microsoft.Extensions.AI and Azure.AI.OpenAI packages.
Syncfusion has added an AI layer to its .NET MAUI PDF viewer in Essential Studio 2026 Volume 3. The SfSmartPdfViewer control now ships with three features: an AI Assistant that summarizes documents and answers questions, Smart Redaction that scans for personal or financial data, and Smart Form Fill that maps copied text to PDF form fields. Basic viewing still works without an AI service.
The viewer connects through Microsoft.Extensions.AI, so an Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Ollama, Gemini, Claude or other chat client can be registered in DI; custom providers implement IChatInferenceService. Setup requires the Syncfusion.Maui.SmartPdfViewer NuGet package and AI settings on the control. Redaction is permanent and AI detection can miss data, so keep backups and require review before applying changes.
Real-world use
- A customer onboarding app where users review agreements, redact personal data and fill registration PDFs.
- An insurance or legal workflow that summarizes long contracts and answers questions about specific clauses.
- A field-service app that pastes customer details from an email into a PDF form on a tablet.
- A finance app that scans statements for card numbers and phone numbers before sharing documents externally.
Why it matters
It lets a MAUI app add document understanding and redaction without building a separate AI pipeline, but client-side API keys and irreversible redaction need careful handling.
