PostgreSQL extension for VS Code: explore, query and troubleshoot

Microsoft's PostgreSQL extension brings connecting, browsing schemas, writing and running SQL, and asking GitHub Copilot about the connected database into VS Code. The post walks through four workflows, from exploring a first table to reviewing a performance recommendation. It is a practical guide for .NET developers who work against PostgreSQL and want to stay in their editor.

ServiceStack 10.4
Vector search in your database

Vector search comes to OrmLite with ServiceStack v10.4 embedding columns

ServiceStack v10.4 adds a [Vector] attribute to OrmLite, so embeddings from an AI model can be stored with your rows. Distance functions such as Sql.CosineDistance() combine with filters, joins and tenant rules in one typed query. For .NET developers building RAG features, this removes the need for a separate vector store to keep in sync.

FusionCache 2.9

Two-level caching in .NET with FusionCache and Redis

This guide shows how to combine FusionCache's in-process L1 memory with a shared Redis L2 layer in a product catalog API. The author keeps Clean Architecture boundaries intact and focuses on correct cache behavior rather than raw speed numbers. It is a practical starting point for developers who run several instances and need to plan freshness and invalidation.

PostgreSQL jsonb with EF Core 10: Mapping, Indexing and Querying Document Columns

EF Core 10 with Npgsql 10 maps a .NET complex type to a PostgreSQL jsonb column using ToJson(). The article shows how LINQ property access becomes ->> SQL, which index types serve which queries, and when a jsonb column beats a separate EAV table. It is a practical guide for models with many sparse optional fields.

EF Core 11
One config file for commands
DVDEV Community: #csharp Mikhail Nefedov Oct 24

EF Core 11 adds .config/dotnet-ef.json for dotnet ef defaults

EF Core 11 lets the dotnet ef command-line tool read default options from a .config/dotnet-ef.json file. When your DbContext lives outside the startup project, you no longer need to repeat --project and --startup-project on every migration or database command. The tool finds the nearest config by walking up the folder tree, and explicit command-line flags still take precedence.

MySQL vs Nebula
Why graph queries stalled

MySQL Recursive CTE vs C# BFS vs NebulaGraph at 500 Million Rows

A team moving a relationship-heavy system from MySQL to graph databases reports that a recursive CTE collapsed at around 500 million rows. The author built a reproducible benchmark comparing the CTE, a C# breadth-first search on the same MySQL tables, and NebulaGraph. The results suggest the CTE's design, not the relational engine, caused most of the delay.

SQL Server
Wrong session setting

SQL Server Msg 1934: why QUOTED_IDENTIFIER errors happen and how to fix them

SQL Server error 1934 appears when a statement uses a feature such as a filtered index while the session has QUOTED_IDENTIFIER off. The author explains why the ASP.NET Core application never sees it while the classic sqlcmd does, and how the setting interacts with stored procedures. Useful for anyone who updates ASP.NET Core Identity tables by hand.

MongoDB driver 3.12
Who owns shutdown

MongoClient in ASP.NET Core: lifetime and shutdown ownership

The article explains how to register MongoClient as a singleton in ASP.NET Core and how request-scoped services should borrow it. It shows that disposing the client through the container does not close the driver's cluster, and that the selected driver version changes the answer. It is a useful reference for teams running MongoDB in web apps.

Cosmos DB Emulator
Database tests in CI
CDAzure Cosmos DB Blog Jay Gordon Oct 23

Testing Cosmos DB writes locally and in GitHub Actions with the emulator

The Azure Cosmos DB blog shows how to test a database-backed feature against the Azure Cosmos DB Emulator running in Docker, then run the same tests in GitHub Actions. The example is a Python demo app, but the pattern applies to any .NET service that talks to Cosmos DB. Each pull request update runs against a fresh emulator, so you can check that a write reached storage and changed the answer, not just that the HTTP call returned 200.

Cosmos DB
Check keys before rotating
CDAzure Cosmos DB Blog Iria Osara Oct 21

Safe Key Rotation for Azure Cosmos DB is now generally available

Azure Cosmos DB's Safe Key Rotation now shows the last-used timestamp for each account key and can be turned on from the Features blade in the Azure portal. Teams can confirm whether a key is still in use before regenerating it or disabling local authentication. That lowers the risk of an outage caused by rotating a key that a forgotten application still depends on.
